Rebecca Brew of Crotty's Bar Kilrush presenting the Crotty Cup 2011 to Jarlath Hassett West Clare Cycling Club.
Jarlath Hassett of the West Clare Cycling Club was the worthy winner of the Crotty Cup on Sunday 22nd of May in Kilrush. The Ennis man covered the 20k time trial course with an average speed of 39kph to best the other 23 competitors.
The famous cycle race which which was first ran in 1934 was revived on Sunday after being last run in 2007. The race was run off on this occasion as an individual time trial. Each rider had to individually complete the 20k out and back course on the Kilrush to Kildysart road. The riders had the benefit of a strong tailwind for the first 10k but had to fight a strong headwind on the way home. Riders from clubs in Clare, Limerick and Dublin competed in the various categories.
The Senior race came down to a nail biting finish with just 11 seconds separating the top 3 riders. The John Ryan Cup was won by the best Junior rider Jack O’Shea from the local West Clare Cycling Club.
